These baked pear and apple chips are a fun, healthy, and delicious snack, perfect for the whole family!
Snacks are something I often struggle with. If I had my way, I'd eat brownies, cookies, and chocolate for every snack. However, my waistline doesn't like that, so I try to choose healthy snacks. Quite often I end up eating the same thing every day, and usually I end up reaching for a piece of fresh fruit. I'm always curious what other people choose for healthy snacks and I love trying new ideas.
This month I was assigned to dietitian duo, Serena & Deanna's blog, Teaspoon of Spice for the Secret Recipe Club. I looked through their blog and I was drawn to quite a few recipes, like Triple Chocolate Whole Wheat Pancakes, Apple Blueberry Fruit Leather, and Impossibly Good Lemon Bars.
I ultimately decided on their recipe for Sweet Ginger Pear Chips. They offered a few variations on the spices, and the fruits used, so I decided to make both apple and pear chips. I stuck with the same ginger flavoring for both, and that was a good decision!
These chips were a delicious snack, and I really think that baking the apples especially brought out the flavor and they were incredibly sweet. I will definitely be making these again. A few things to note, if you choose to do both apples and pears, make sure you put them on separate cooking sheets. My pears were quite juicy and therefore the baking time was increased significantly compared to the apples. I also didn't have a mandolin big enough to slice my fruit, so I cut it by hand. It's important for your fruit to be as close to the same thickness as possible so it bakes at the same rate.
Ginger Pear and Apple Chips
Ingredients:
1 large, ripe pear
1 large apple
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1. Slice apples and pears as thinly as possible, using a sharp knife or a mandolin. (The seeds will pop right out of the fruit, or you can use the tip of your knife to poke them out.)
2. Place sliced fruit on a wire rack on top of a baking sheet. Make sure you use a separate baking sheet for each fruit.
3. Mix the sugar and ginger together and sprinkle evenly over the sliced fruit.
4. Bake at 275 degrees for 40 minutes, then check to see if the fruit has dried out and crisped up. Add additional time as needed, until fruit reaches desired crispness.
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container.
